3.0 CRITICAL REVIEW

When individual works in any of the specific fields or areas then there are different things through which he came across and gain different knowledge, skills, and values related to the specific area in which he or she is working. The student had chosen to work in an organization that is offering care to the old age peoples and all the different sections of the society need to be treated differently and in a specific manner so it is important for the practitioners to be very specific while offering the care to their patients. When the individual is offering care to the old age peoples then they need to be more careful and need to handle them in an effective manner. Offering care to old age people is not the same as any other group as their needs are more complex(Lakin, et. al. 2017).

The residential care home is offering better assistance to the old age people in their daily activities and for this, all the employees working there needs to be very effective and should deliver better performance. Managing the old age group of patients would not be easier for the researcher as this group of patients is having more complex needs as compared to other groups. The health and social care service providers need to focus on their roles and responsibilities in an effective manner so that they can work effectively. When the researcher or the student would be working in thisfield that it is important for them to have some of the specific skills and knowledge which are important for providing care to the chosen group of patients.

When the individual is delivering care to the old age people then it is important for them to have better knowledge related to all the common health issues which are being faced by the peoples belonging to this age group. Along with this the professionals working in this area also need to focus on promoting the physical and mental well-being of old age patients which is important for their overall health. Also, the individual needs to have better critical thinking skills which can help them in observing all the details related to the patients which can help them in offering better care and promoting their well-being as well. Working in this field requires a lot of patient and compassion because dealing with old age people is not an easy task(Cannavò, et. al. 2019). The employee working in this field needs to have better listening skills and patience as well so that they can carefully and patiently listen to their patients and provide them better physical and mental support. When the care is being given to the old age peoples then the ethical considerations become more important for the health and social care practitioners. There are some important areas in which the individual needs to focus while working in this field and they are mentioned below in detail.

3.1 Communication

Communication is one of the most important things for individuals whenever they are working in any of the organizations. In the context of health and social care services, it is important for the professionals to focus on having effective communication skills that can help them in communicating effectively with the patients and their family members(de Carvalho, et. al. 2017). When the patient and the health care service provider is having better communication among themselves than it can help them in sharing better information among them and also help them the health care professionals in involving the patients in the treatment process effectively. In the health and social care sector, it is important for the professionals to focus on communicating effectively with the patients and with their co-employees as well which can help them in enhancing the overall information sharing among all the important stakeholders and can enhance the effectiveness of the care offered to the patients and also have a positive impact on the wellbeing of the patients.

When the practitioners are offering care to the old age peoples that better knowledge related to verbal and non-verbal communication is very important for the individuals because they need to be handled and communicated calmly. For better communication, it is important for the student to focus on having better knowledge related to communicating effectively with the old age peoples and along with this they also need to have betterlistening skills which are important skills for having better communications. In this placement area, it is crucial for the health care professional to focus on developing all the important skills which are having an impact on the way they are communicating with others and especially with their patients.

The individuals need to understand that there are different types of patients and old age patients are having different diseases and on the basis of it, they are having diverse complex needs which need makes it more difficult for the practitioners to offer better care to the patients and communicating effectively with them. The residential home in which the student had received the placement is having old age patients with multiple diseases which are having different needs and they want to be heard nicely and needs to be communicated effectively(Yu, et. al. 2020). While working in this case study placement area it is important for the student to focus on understanding their patients and their needs in an effective manner and for this it is important for them to focus on having effective communication and better interaction with them and their family members as well.

While working in this placement area the individual should have better stress management skills as it is important for managing all the tasks on time and with patience(Nespereira-Campuzano, and Vazquez-Campo, 2017). Stress is having a negative impact on the performance of the employment and sometimes the individual reflects this stress while having interaction with others and in case of the healthcare sector is can have a negative impact on the health of the patients. Also, the individuals need to have better emotional control and should have better self-control on their emotions as it is a very important skill for the healthcare professional to consider while communicating with their patients and their families(Moss, 2017). The health and social care service provider working in this field should understand their patients effectively and then try to interact with them in an effective manner.

While having a conversation with the old age peoples it is important for the healthcare professional to keep their tone of voice low and should talk politely with their patients which can help them in developing better friendliness with their patients which is important for proving them better emotional support. The students have to focus on treating all the patients with respect and should ensure that they communicate with clarity and confidence which is also having an influence on the way they have interacted with their patients. It can be said that if the student is working with better skills, values, and having better knowledge related to how to communicate effectively with the old age peoples then they can deliver better care to the patients of the case study placement area(Tulsky, et. al. 2017). If the communication held in the healthcare organization among the healthcare professional and patient and in the entire workforce is effective then it can have a positive impact on the overall health of the patients.

3.2 Anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice

Discrimination is an important issue for all the organization and it needs to be managed in an effective manner as it can lead to ethical issues if not managed in an effective manner. In the workplace discrimination can be experienced by both the customers and the employees as well. In the context of health and social care also discrimination is being given importance and it is important for the healthcare professional to treat their patients with equality and without practicing any kind of discrimination which providing service to the patients. Discrimination is being faced by old age patients and they usually experience discriminatory treatment while getting care which is having a negative impact on their health and well-being(Paudel, 2020).

When the student is working in the chosen placement area then it is important for him to have better skills that can help them in treating all the patients equally and without practicing discrimination while providing care to them. In the researcher studies, it is being mentioned that the anti-discriminatory practice is a very important issue to consider for all the peoples involved in the health and social care service providers offering care to children and old age peoples as they are the ones which need to be managed carefully(Mesmer-Magnus, et. al. 2017). The student needs to have better knowledge related to the anti-discriminatory practice which can help them in an effective manner and will also help them in understanding that how to treat all the patients equally irrespective of the diseases, age, gender, religion, or any other parameter. If any type of discrimination is being faced by the employees working in the healthcare and social care organization then it is having a negative impact on the workplace environment and also has a negative impact on the performance of the employees. It is important for the student to treat all the other co-workers and patients with equality and should not practice any kind of discrimination with them.

Along with the anti-discriminatory practice the professionals working in this field also need to focus on the anti-obsessive practice as they are also important in this area of practice. For working in an anti-oppressive manner it is important for the individuals to focus on developing better skills which can help them in understanding the cultural differences and helps them in treating all the different religions and culture with equal respect and the individuals need to apply these skills in their day to day practice which working with other employees and with the patients as well(Carpenter, 2020). If the student is having better reflecting and critical thinking skills that it will help them in working in an anti-oppressive manner. For working effectively in the chosen area of placement it is important for the student to have better knowledge related to the anti-oppressive practice and its importance in the health and social care service especially in the case of old age patients.

3.3 Personal and Professional attitude and values

The attitude and values of the individual play a significant impact in the way the individual act and behave while working or offering any of the services to the customers. It is important for individuals to have a positive attitude towards their work which can help them in delivering better performance to the organization. In the context of the health and social care sector, the personal and professional attitude and values of the practitioners is very important as it is having an impact on the way the patients are being managed and treated(Kaya, et. al. 2017).The student needs to have a positive attitude towards the old age peoples then only he or she will be able to work effectively and will be able to deliver better service to these patients. In contrast to this if the student is having a negative attitude towards the old age peoples and find it difficult to treat them then he or she would not be able to work effectively in the organization which is working for offering care to the old age peoples.

The personal values of the student are also having an impact on the way in which he or she is working and for this, it is important for the student to have better personal values. For delivering better care to the old age peoples and for working in the health and social care sector it is important for the individual to have values such as commitment, honesty, efficiency, loyalty, dependability, and reliability. All these personal values are very important for the healthcare professionals who are working in the sector which is offering care to the old age peoples and these skills also help the individuals in treating the patients nicely and helps them in delivering better care to the old age patients. The employees working in this area also needs to have better soft skills which can help them in representing a positive attitude towards the old age peoples and make them deliver better performance as well.

Professionalism is also very important for the individual working in any of the diverse sectors of the health and social care services. For working in a professional manner the individual needs to have a professional attitude and values so that they can maintain proper professionalism while working. The student is working as a health and social care service provider for the old age peoples and it is important for him to have values such as respect, equality, human dignity, and social justice and these skills can help them in treating all the patients equally without any kind of discrimination(Egener, et. al. 2017). Along with this for working in a professional manner it is essential for the student to have skills such as the ability to work in an ethical manner, having critical thinking skills, having better time management skills, should reflect better leadership skills, and should work in a responsible manner.

3.4 Using the problem-solving techniques and decision making

The resident care home is having patients with multiple diseases due to which the practitioners or the service providers need to take much important decision and for which it is important for them to have better and effective decision-making skills. The students have to deal with different patients with different complex needs which makes it important for them to have better problem solving and decision-making skills so that they can work in an effective manner and can make a better decision whenever required(Monrouxe, and Rees, 2017).

For having better and effective decision-making skills it is important for the student to have critical thinking skills which can help them in choosing the best option among all the different alternatives. Along with this, the student needs to have a better ability to reflect on their own activities which can help them in better learning and this would improve their decision-making skills. The student also needs to have better observational skills which can help them in observing all the small little information related to the patient which would help them in making a better decision for their patients(Nightingale, et. al. 2018). The situation can arise when the health care service provider has to make a crucial decision which is associated with the life of their patient and in such a situation, it is important for the practitioners to have better emotional control so that they can make the best possible decision for their patients.

When the patient belongs to the old age group then they are expected to face different issues and when the health and social care service provider is offering care to them at that time also several issues might arise as the old age peoples can get easily irritated and get easily angry which led to conflicts. Due to all this, it is important for the student to have better problem-solving skills which can help them in convincing the patients also in solving their issues as well. For solving the issues in an effective manner the student also needs to have better knowledge related to all the different issues which are expected to be faced by the old age peoples when the assistance is being provided to them in their day to day activities. Communication skills of the health and social care service provide affects the way in which he or she is solving any of the issue related to their patients so it can be said that if the student is having better communication skill that it will help them in discussing the issue effectively with the patient and his family and can help them in resolving the issue easily(Halian, et. al. 2020). Along with this the student also needs to have better knowledge related to thedifferent problem-solving techniques which can be used by them for solving the issues and conflicts.
