The study is focused on the nursing reflection on communication barriers and some effective strategies, which have been used in overcoming all of the communication barriers. The “Rolfe reflective model” is a useful framework mainly for self-reflection. As this study is based on reflection, thus the “Rolfe et al. 2001” reflective model has been selected to evaluate this reflective model. This reflective model is standard with three different types of stages and all of those stages include “what”, “so what,” and “now what”. By those stages, the overall demonstration of the experience of nurses based on this topic has been stated here. In the first stage, mainly the identification and evaluation of the communication barriers, which have been faced by the nurses during interaction with others, have been stated here. In the next step, mainly the application of some models or theories, which are based on communication like “Surety” and “Soler” in the communication episode, has been demonstrated here. In the last stage, mainly the overall learning and some of the strategies, which need to be implemented here for overcoming the barriers to communication and improvement of the communication skills, have been stated here. All of those aspects have been highlighted in all the steps of this model based on this topic.

WHAT stage

As per my observation, the main problem that has been faced in the nursing practice is several types of communication barriers. As a student nurse, I have also faced major kinds of communication barriers in my interaction with others or patients. Apart from this, it can be also stated that some of the major communication barriers can be faced from the side of patients and outside environment that make another kind of barrier. Competing demands, background noise, and lack of privacy are made potential barriers to communicating effectively with nurses and patients. As per my experience, I have demonstrated some of the effective communication barriers, which I have mainly faced as a student nurse in my career.

Time constraints

As per my experience, I think time constraints for lack of it can make a significant barrier to effectively communicating with others. As a nurse, creating good interaction with the patient or in the workplace is needed and this can be a great part of the time management plan. In that case, nurses are faced with some demands of competition, which can neglect communication (Blackwood et al. 2019). The time-consuming communication can harm effective communication with nurses. At the start of my practice, I faced a problem in a clinic during communicating with patients. I had spent too much time communicating with one patient, which can be frustrating for another patient. Due to that reason, I think that it is one of the main communication barriers for a nurse.

Poor environmental factors

In my practice career, I have faced this problem the most. In a clinic, I faced that noise and the other distractions. This effect can hamper effective communication with my patients who have faced dementia and some cognitive impairment. I think it was the main challenge for communication. I faced this communication barrier in my career. Due to that reason, a poor environment can make a significant barrier to communication among nurses (Nouri et al. 2019). Based on that experience, I have faced that it is more difficult for giving some important messages to the patient with this poor concentration in the noise environment. However, it is more difficult for processing the treatment procedure (nursingtimes.net, 2017).

Jargons

As per my experience, it can be stated that Jargon is one of the most important among all the professionals on the same ground. It has been more difficult for me in my early practice, which has affected my communication with my seniors or my colleagues. However, it is sometimes more tough for understanding. Due to that reason, it can influence the diagnosis process mainly for cancer. Based on that purpose, I can state that the poor use of jargon can affect communication (Ali and Watson, 2018).

SO WHAT stage

As per my observation, it can be seen that mainly the “Soler” and “Surety” model helps in effective communication. During my practice, I have used those kinds of models that help in improving my communication skills. The importance of those models in the development of my skills has been evaluated here.

SOLER model

As per my observation, active listening is one of the important aspects of the development of communication skills. The SOLER model helps in improving active listening or mainly the expression for physically transmitting the massage. By the implementation of this model, I can improve my active listening. Along with this, I can make my full attention to the verbal message, improve my voice tone, posture, and gesture as a person, and be able to understand the feelings, thoughts, and behaviour. By using this skill, I can improve my effective skills in listening. Apart from this, I can improve my body language, which helps also improve active listening (Nandini, 2020). Apart from this, I can mainly improve the learning and understanding skills through which I can be able to learn the interest and understanding of the patient. The first step of this model is to sit squarely to help in implementing the body position for facing the client and making me seem attentive and attractive. The second aspect of this model is “open posture” which helps me in improving my body language. By using these aspects, I can make a sign of hostility and avoid materializing defensive. The third step is included “lean forward” which helps in showing me more interest and attention to others. Due to that reason, I can make myself care about my work. Another part of this model is “eye contact” it is a more important step that helps me in finding balance. By using this step, I can be able to consider myself a well-being person by maintaining the hierarchical status that is the most important for my career. The last step is included the “relaxation” step which helps me in showing relaxation mainly through my body language (Stockton.ac.uk, 2022). Due to that reason, a lot of respect can come from my patient, which is one of the important aspects of effective communication. By including all of those steps, I can improve all of the key aspects of developing communication. For all of those experiences, I can state that, it is one of the greatest models, which can help me, in improving my communication skills.

SURETY model

As per my experience, the SURETY model is another kind of communication developmental model that helps in improving communication skills. The surety model has six steps which are included mainly “sit at an angle”, “uncross arms and legs”, “relax”, “eye contact”, “touch”, and “intuition” (Treloar et al. 2018). By implementing the first step, which is “sit at an angle,” I can improve my sitting position. This helps me in looking perfectly in my profession and makes me a professional expert. For that reason, I can be able to carry on my interaction in a professional way. Along with the second aspect, I can be able to make my sitting position better, which helps in reflecting my body language. I can improve my body language better by implementing this aspect for improving my communication skills. Looking relaxed is the most important part of communication improvement. In that case, it is more beneficial for the nurses for making a clear interaction with the patient. By implementing this “relax” aspect, I can be able to show myself as a relaxed person that helps in communicating with my patient in my nursing practice (Muratova et al. 2021). By implementing the next aspect which is “eye contact”, I can able to show be more attentive as an active listener. Eye contact is another main part of effective communication that helps in showing my interest level and understanding level. By the implementation of the SURETY model, I can make my non-verbal transmission skills which helps in improving all of the important aspects of effective communication (library.ryerson.ca, 2022).

All of those skills and their importance have been stated above through my nursing experience. By the application of all of those effective communication models, I can easily able to improve my active listening skills, verbal and non-verbal communication, and interaction with patients through eye contact, development of body language, active listening, and interest level (King et al. 2021). Based on all of those perspectives, I can state that both two models and their implementation are more effective for improving communication skills.

NOW WHAT stage

The overall evaluation mainly stated some major information based on my experience, As per my perspective and my experience, I have stated that nurses need to take several kinds of steps through which the development of communication skills can be done. As per my experience, different kinds of strategies have been evaluated here that help in improving communication skills in the nursing career (Farzi et al. 2018).

Implementation of communication models

As per my experience, which has been discussed above, it can be stated that I can improve mainly my non-verbal communication skills through the application of the “SURETY” and “SOLER” models. The importance of those models is evaluated in this study (Cheung et al. 2021). Along with this, all of those cans help us for the improvement of nursing learning and education and the development of communication skills (Granheim et al. 2018). Due to that reason, as per my observation, it can be stated that the implementation of those communication models can be more effective than helps in reducing communication barriers and making us professional nursing experts.

Time management during communication

In my experience, I have stated that I have faced some challenges for the time constraints. For reducing this problem, I spent limited time communicating with patients. I use mainly the “small talk” strategy in communicating with others and improving the quality of communication strategy for reducing the time-consuming interaction. This strategy helps in the improvement of quality communication (Arnold and Boggs, 2019). Based on that experience, the use of a quality communication strategy needs to be implemented for reducing the communication barriers (nursingtimes.net, 2017).

Finding suitable environment

As per the above evaluation, I have stated that I have faced some problems in a noisy environment. In that case, for effective communication, we need to find some calm and quiet space for communicating with patients that makes a positive impact on the development of their communication skills (Günay and K?l?nç, 2018).

Use of jargons

The main problem that I have faced in my start career is the lack of understanding of the jargon. During the time of experimenting my nursing at Royal College in the UK, I can face some problems in the diagnosis of cancer patients for the lack of using and understanding of the jargon. For reducing this challenge, I have tried to understand and use jargon that helps in improving my professional language and English proficiency that helps in reducing these barriers (Back et al. 2019). Due to that reason, the implementation of jargon and improvement in English proficiency helps in reducing this barrier.

CONCLUSION

From the above evaluation, the importance of applying the communication model and some of the communication barriers, which I have applied and faced in my nursing career, have been concluded. As a student nurse, I have stated that major kinds of nursing challenges have been faced during my practices that make some complications in my career development. In that case, I have used mainly the SOLER and SURETY model of communication in my practice development, which helps in improving my communication nursing practice. Due to that reason, I can easily communicate with my patient who makes me more efficient and effective in my nursing profession. Apart from this, some of the strategies have also been evaluated here through which I can improve my verbal and non-verbal skills of communication. All of those effective strategies help in improving my communication skills and as a student nurse; I can be able to improve my career development by using all of those aspects. However, those strategies and models that have been evaluated here are highly significant for reducing the communication barriers in the nursing experience.
