Introduction: Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research Methods in Healthcare Studies

Critical appraisal

Healthcare is a sensitive area for study, and thus it is required to be perfect in all the senses. This is a qualitative method of identifying the appraisal of the study, which is related to the patients with heart failure and the role of heart failure nurses. So it is quite clear that this study is based on a serious matter of the health sector, and the role of the nurses will eventually play the biggest role in curing those patients [1]. Thus the importance of the study lies within the subject matter of the study. To develop a proper understanding, this study has been chosen for giving insights into the methods and process and success of the study.

This is a critical appraisal method with a framework that significantly apprises the qualitative study- "Managing Patients with Heart Failure: a Qualitative Study of Multidisciplinary Teams with Specialist Heart Failure Nurses". Various aspects were included to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the study so far, like- credibility, province, interchangeable aspect, etc. CASP is a perfect tool with three parts divided into ten questions to show the systematic manner and unique thinking process for the readers to understand it better than normal reading. So the CASP guidelines with its checklist will properly help to understand and judge the study better. Proving focus on the ten questions and finding suitable answers to those questions initiated by CASP will eventually help to gain a proper understanding of the study besides its strengths and weaknesses.

There is a clear statement of the aim of the study in the purpose of the study. The objective of the study also delivers a coherent description of the aim of this study. This study aimed to identify the problems of the clinicians regarding the whole treatment process and the role & importance of the specialist heart failure nurses in a multidisciplinary team. In the introduction part, the common treatment process for heart failure patients and their divisions have been stated briefly [2]. To describe the background of the study besides the treatment process in the community care, the necessity of cardiologists and hospitals for several heart failure cases was also described. The importance of the study lies within its uniqueness, as there is very little research that has been made on the recent clinical development through specialist nurses. So the relevance of the study lies within the treatment process and understanding of the problems faced by the clinicians and the support of the specialist nurses so far.

The qualitative research method was used by the paper, and that is almost appropriate for the paper, as it was trying to develop an understanding of the experience of the patients as well as the clinicians. The qualitative method was used here to ensure the confirmability and credibility of the research area. To get appropriate perspectives of the clinicians and patients, qualitative research is admirable [3]. The essence of the research and the importance of collecting data is thus delivered through the process of qualitative research.

The design of the research properly justifies the research method. This is because the research design was taken under consideration after analysis of other researches and their focus areas. The focus of the other researches was on the clinical guidelines, and the decision-making in the primary care and quantitative method of data collection was common for patients. This study used three areas of the United Kingdom to widely explore qualitative research.

Pieces of information of the participants have been briefly described in the study to deliver the relevance with the aim of the research. “National Health Service” approved the research, and the patients who are in severe condition or who are difficult to handle were taken under consideration for this research. So that the urgency can be understood and the process also can be understood [4]. Besides that, purposive sampling was used in this paper for understanding the different perspectives of the clinicians through interviews. Only the physicians who provide renal care were not participating in this research and were not willing to provide any negative news about the healthcare.

The data was collected in a very sensitive way considering every perspectives possible perspective. In three locations, the data collection method was implemented, and if any unique issue occurs, repetitive interview processes are also conducted. Thus the data collection also justifies the research.

The relationship between the researchers and the participants is very crucial to consider. However, in this case, there were not many irregularities seen from any side. The researchers were knowledgeable enough to consider the understanding of healthcare issues [5]. On the other hand, the participants, like the patients and their relatives and the general clinicians, were eager enough to participate in this research to express their views and problems, and experiences.

The ethical part was shortly and appropriately explained by this paper through the acknowledgement of approval by the "National Health Service", “Health Research Authority", and “Research Ethics Committee South West". This suggests that the research has been done in a very ethical way by not violating any kind of ethical issues or privacy concerns. A paper of acknowledgement was also provided to the participants for their willingness.

Data analysis software has been used for researching constant comparative methods. Besides that, the data analysis process familiarizes the sketching of transcriptive themes [6].

The discussion and finding of the paper adequately provide attention to the problems that are still in the treatment process of the heart failure patients and also the communication probabilities of the patients with the general clinicians.

The value of this research lies within the treatment process of the serious disease - heart failure. This kind of disease deserves emergency treatment, and the focus of the research is the same to find out glitches in the treatment process despite the advancement of healthcare with specialist heart failure nurses.

Application of practice

Midlands, South West of England, and South Central are the three locations where the paper used its research process. Heart failure is not an issue of health that increases inside the body slowly. Instead, the rapidness of this health issue increases the urgency of treatment. The researchers thus understood that unplanned admission is more common in such heart failure cases. Keeping this in mind, an in-depth qualitative interview process has been chosen by the researchers to conduct the study. In those three places of the U.K., 24 clinicians were taken to research primary, secondary, and community care. To deliver proper information to the future practices, this is important to express that the whole continent and their different perspectives and behaviors cannot be understood within these areas or by taking only 24 persons for qualitative research. This study had decently expressed that the renal care specialists for heart failure were totally out of their participant's list. Thus it is also important for further researches to take more varieties under consideration for conducting health research. The participants of this research have acknowledged that there are still various challenges regarding heart failure treatment and enough improvement needed in the future. This can be a suggestion or recommendation for future practices to focus on the specific problems regarding heart failure treatment. According to the clinicians, a specialist heart failure nurse is needed to lead the team and to communicate properly with the patients and with other clinicians. But this is a perspective of the same side, and that did not consider the involvement and thoughts of the specialist nurses [7]. Thus the recommendation in that case also suggests further practices to capture the perspective of the specialist nurses widely.

Reflection on qualitative appraisal method

Health and social care researchers these days are trying to adapt the qualitative approach to gain reliability and trustworthiness over the collected data to implement a better practice. Qualitative research, in a sense, is not fit for all the purposes of healthcare research, and various professionals have also argued that only the set of questionnaires cannot properly aggregate the whale acceptance and accuracy of the research method.

Depending on all these controversies, there is still the importance of a qualitative method. To improve the quality and decrease the existence of inappropriate findings CASP tool has been used to properly examine the paper by understanding the issues [8].

Advantages of the qualitative approach

  1. Healthcare is a critical issue to understand. Thus the process and approach should be time efficient and easier and quicker so that any researcher can conduct the process.
  2. Besides this, critical appreciation of healthcare research needs to be understood as a disadvantage of the tool and other tools also necessary for proper appraisal of the paper properly. The questions that are provided by the tool have a nature of providing in-depth thinking so that the readers could think in a wider way.
  3. One very attractive nature of the paper is that the whole study used subheadings and appropriate headings so that the readers would find their answers with a short scout.

Disadvantages of the qualitative approach

  1. This qualitative tool was developed in the medical area in 1994. It is a negative suggestion towards the validity and reliability of the study.
  2. The finding and generalized way of providing settings and results by the quantitative method is not set up by the qualitative method in the paper.
  3. CASP is unable to provide an overall approach for the appraisal of the paper. That is a [9].

These are the advantages and limitations of the used tool CASP here for the dedicated research paper on health and especially heart attack treatment. Further research is necessary for developing the approach of the treatment and also to find out the importance of the specialist nurses through their knowledge.
