Introduction
Ethical principle refers to the values, moral and principles that are followed within the organization for effectively carrying out their activity. It is the pivotal aspect of each organization as it helps in promoting honesty, fairness, integrity, trustworthiness, accountability at the workplace. Further, business ethics put emphasis on considering the interest of customers, shareholders, employees and local communities while initiating the tourism activities. The current report is based on the description of the ethical issues facing by the employees in various hotels and retail businesses. It will also describe the personal feeling related to the ethical issues and depicts various skills that should be developed for overcoming the ethical issues. Further, action plan will be provided to depict the activities that should be initiated for successfully gaining the desired skills & knowledge. For expressing the perception and feeling related to ethical issue, Gibbs reflective model will be used. It is the most famous cyclic model that describes the structured process for guiding the act of reflection (Gibbs reflective model, 2024).
Description Of Case
The case study is the related to the scenario of July 2023 and February 2024 where many reputed hotels and airline organizations are not following the national minimum wage guideline while providing the compensation. Further, the organization is discriminating between man and woman while providing wages that indicate the violation of ethics by the business entity. Discrimination, unfairness and injustice are recognized as the three ethical issues that prevailing within the case study. It has been identified from the case study that company is not able to follow the UN’s Global code of Ethics for tourism which in turn creates various legal obligations. In the article 7 of UN Global code of ethics, it has been identified that an adequate working hour, wages and working condition should be offered to the entire professional or all the employees within the business organization (Article 7 of UN’s Global ethics, 2023). Along with this, business entities are not able to align their activities with the National Minimum Wage legislation and the Equality Act 2010. According to the Equality Act (2010), employees at the workplace should not be discriminated on any basis whereas gender biasness is prevailing in the various tourism organizations (Dauber and Spencer-Oatey, 2023). Firms are not providing an equitable amount of wages to the workers on the same level rather decides wages on the basis of gender. Along with this, injustice is also done with the young workers as company is not providing wages on the basis of performance which result into inequality compensation against their skills.
Reflection Of Learning
Based on my understanding of the professional code of conduct, employees and employers should maintain integrity, confidentiality objectivity, professional competence and behaviour in carrying out their activities (Tong, Uyen and Quoc, 2021). Along with this, fairness, justice, respect, accountability, discipline, transparency, honesty, trust and loyalty are the basic ethics which should be followed within the business organizations. If I discovered that I am paid very less as compared to others than I would feel dissatisfied and cheated. This will eventually impact my overall performance as due to the lack of integrity and fairness my motivation level will reduce that further leads decline in the overall productivity. This also indicates that firm is not effectively following the professional code of conduct and ethical principles which reduces my trust and loyalty towards the organization. Along with this, unethical behaviour within the firm will result into developing a situation of conflict which ultimately influences my overall satisfaction level. My engagement within the organization is also negatively influenced due to the unethical practices which will eventually result into leaving the organization or decreasing my overall productivity.
Skills For Action
From the above case study, I has been identified that critical thinking, ethical sensitivity and communication are the three skills that an employee must have for resolving and addressing the ethical issue. Based on the case study, it has been identified that employees are not having effective knowledge regarding the national minimum wages. Further, it also indicates inadequate communication skills of the employees that restrict them to confidently raise voice against the unethical practices that are prevailing within the business entity (Crane et al, 2019). Due to the lack of confidence, young workers and women are not clearly conveying the discrimination in wages that has been faced by them. To overcome the issue, employers should enhance their communication, ethical sensitivity and critical thinking skills. With the help of effective communication, they will be able to depict the discrimination that they are facing and motivate all the others employees to take action for resolving this issue. Along with this, critical thinking skills will help in evaluating the current rules & policies of the organization effectively and supports in identifying all the unethical policies of the organization. Ethical sensitivity refers to the self-awareness regarding the ethical values so that employees are able to effectively identify any unethical activities taking place in their organization Lastly, employees should have ethical sensitivity which helps in creating awareness regarding all the ethics and legal policies of the industry based on which firm’s policies could be evaluated.
