In general terms, sustainability is referred to as theconcept of meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the needs of the future generation(Moore, et. al. 2017). In the present era, it had become important for businesses to focus on achieving sustainability and operating in asustainable manner. Sustainability had become important for all the businesses operating in diverse industries and it had become important for the firms to focus on the three factors of sustainability which include the protection of the environment, maintaining social equity, and economic viability. The event industry is also an important industry which is important in terms of sustainability and it is important for the businesses operating in this industry to solve the different sustainability issues which are being faced by them. This essay focuses on explaining the importance of sustainability for the event industry and what are major sustainability issues for event management and how these issues are being addressed.

MAIN BODY

Sustainability for Event management

Sustainability had become an important concern for all industries and for the event industry also it is important. A larger number of companies are operating in the event industry and it is important for them to organized the events in an environment-friendly manner and they should work in a sustainable manner(Ives, et. al. 2018). The event operators need to work on different things because when the event is being organized that it created a lot of negative impact on the environment. It is important for the event organizers to ensure that while planning an event it is important that they should focus on integrating their social and environmental responsibilities with it which can help them in developing effective and environmental events that are important for them to attain sustainability. When the company is operating in the event industry that the businesses face different sustainability issues that need to be addressed effectively. The sustainability issues for the event industry include the issues related to health and safety, accessibility and inclusion, fairness, carbon emission, solid waste, and pollution are the major issues.

All the issues related to sustainability are important need to be addressed effectively. With the increasing concern for the environment, the concept of sustainability had gained a lot of importance(Jansson, and Pettersson, 2020). Every single event is having a negative impact on the environment in a number of ways due to which it had become important for the businesses operating in this industry to focus on developing better corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and sustainability strategies which can help them in being effective in the industry. Customer behavior is also changing and in the present era, the customers of the event industry also opt for options that are environmentally friendly. It had become important for the businesses of this industry to make their business operations sustainable which can also help them in gaining a competitive advantage over others as the customers are also opting the companies which operate in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner(White, and Séraphin, 2018). Among all the different sustainability issues two issues that are considered to have a significant impact on the society and environment are being explained in detail.

Solid Waste

Solid waste is one of the important issues for the event industries which affects their sustainability and it is important for the business operating in the event industry to reduce their solid waste. When the waste is in the solid-state then it becomes more complex to decompose it and the same occurs with the event organizers. When an event is being organized the solidwaste which is leftover usually includes the foodstuff, tenting, adhesive, polystyrene, non-reusable decorative materials, and other non-reusable materials. The garbage or the solid waste left over at the end of the event is having a significant negative impact on the environment and leading to several issues(Singh, 2020).

Food waste is the major issue for businesses operating in the event industry and the businesses need to make better efforts for reducing food waste. For reducing food waste the businesses should focus on planning things in an effective manner. The event organizers should focus on estimating the required food and food material in an effective manner as per the number of guests which can help them in limiting the waste. Also, the event organizers can ask the suppliers to deliver the products without or less packaging, and also the packaging which is used should also be reusable which can help the company in reducing their waste and make their supply chain more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

If the unserved food is left over after the event that it is important for the organizers that they should use the food wisely and in such a manner that it should add value to society. The unserved food can be supplied to the NGOs, old age homes, or the orphanage so that the food can be eaten by the peoples and the food can be used in an effective manner(Wickham, et. al. 2020). Also, the company should focus on using the leftover raw material in an effective manner and the organizers can return the raw material to the suppliers or can sell it in the market and they can also use the raw food material in another event. Along with this, the event organizers should focus on using serving methods that can be reusable. For example, instead of using disposables or throwaways the event organizers should use washable and reusable plates this can help them in reducing the solid waste to a greater extent and will add value to the sustainability of the event organizers(Vuong, et. al. 2020). Also, the different event organizers should focus on eliminating or reducing the use of plastic materials while preparation or while serving the food material and should ensure that they are using reusable materials.

In the event, the holding and the posters placed at the venue of the event are also waste as after the event it would be of no use. The organizers can use the posters which can be used in other events also making changes in the poster only and this can also help them in reducing their waste and using the reusable product will also add value to the organization. The majority of the decorative materials which are being used in the events are being made up of non-reusable products that need to be changed and the organizers should focus on using the alternative option which can be reused, and this will help them in working in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.

The invitations for the event can also be designed in such a way that the invention can be printed or designed on a small paper and the organizers can work effectively for reducing the waste of paper in the invitations. The event organizers should focus on renting decorative products that are not frequently used by them as this can also help them in reducing waste. The waste materials such as bottles, cans, and other products that can be recycled needs to be collected from the venue of the event and the company can give it for recycling this would help them in reducing the plastic and toxic waste to a greater extent(Buathong, and Lai, 2019). It can be said that if the event organizers focus on making a wise choice while selecting the products which are going to be used in the event that it can help them in reducing their carbon footprints and will also help them in operating in a sustainable manner. While organizing an event it is important that the organizers should focus on the concept of reducing, reuse, and recycle as this can help them in operating in an environmentally friendly manner.

Health and Safety

When the event is being organized than it is important for the organizers to ensure the health and safety of all the event staff members and all the guests and participants of the event which is an important factor. The event organizers might face great issues related to the health and safety of all the participants of the event. For all the big or the small event, it is important for the event organizers to focus on health and safety as if the company faces any issue related to the health and the safety of the staff and the participants it would have a significant negative impact on the organizers(Fieschi, and Pretato, 2018). Event organizers should make a list of all the requirements of the event and then on the basis of the health and safety measures should be planned so that the risks associated with the events can be reduced.

Ensuring the safety of food is a major issue for the health of the participants and the staff as well. While preparing the food it is important that the organizers should ensure that the food should be prepared in a hygienic manner and the staff members should follow all the safety measures while preparing the food so that high quality and safe food can be prepared for the participants. Along with this while serving the food also all the health safety measures should be considered in an appropriate manner. While selecting the serving materials it is important that the event organizers should select the materials which are environmental friendly and are safe for the health of the participants. The organizers should focus on reducing the use of non-reusable plates instead of it they should use reusable plates and then use the plates with proper washing in a hygienic manner.

The organizers should also focus on selecting an appropriate venue for the event which is safe and is having all the facilities as well(Naumenko, et. al. 2019). For the event organizers, it is important to specifically focus on the safety of the participants from fire, electricity, equipment, waste, noise, and fall from high. If the event is organized at a high then it is important for the operators to ensure that they should focus on confining the area and making boundaries to the confined area which can help them in ensuring the safety of the participants and will also reduce the risk of fall from the hight. Electricity needs to be a major concern for the organizers. Qualified electric professionals should be appointed for managing the connections and connecting the leads and cables and these professionals should ensure the safety of the participants from electricity. Also, the fire extinguishers should be made available and placed if required. It can be said that while organizing an event these factors needs to be considered effective by the organizers as they are the major risk factors associated with the health and safety of the peoples attending the event.

At the events, emergency situations might arise, and for addressing it is important that the organizers had provided better training to their staff members. First aid should be available at the event so that if the situation arises then it can be used(Vincent, et. al. 2017). When the utensils are being cleaned that the event staff should focus on using the non-toxic cleaners as a concern for the health and safety of the participants of the events. Instead of making use of hazardous chemicals, the organizers should focus on using biodegradable or non-toxic substances for cleaning which would help them in ensuring the safety of both the event staff and participants as well. Moreover, it can be said that the organizers should aim at organizing the green event which is having the least negative impact on the environment and will also help the event company in making their business operations sustainable and will provide the long-term benefits.

Covid-19 Challenges

The covid-19 pandemic has changed the way the world is living and had affected all human activities to a greater extent. In the present era of the Covid-19 pandemic, it had become important for all the industries to operate as per the health and safety measures made by the government which can help them in ensuring the safety of the staff and the customers as well(Julius, 2020). The event industry is among the highly affected industries due to the Covid-19 pandemic and it has become important for the event operators to make changes in their practices as per the Covid-19 guidelines. While organizing the events it has become important for the event organizers to focus on organizing the event as per the number of participants allowed by the government. Along with this, it is also important for the event organizers to ensure that the venue should have enough space that the social distancing norms can be followed.

The sustainability issue of solid waste is also increased as the safety equipment such as PPE kits, gloves and masks will increase the waste of the events and the organizers should focus on disposing of them with having less impact on the environment. Along with this, the health and safety measures have also increased due to the Covid-19 guidelines. All the businesses operating in the event industry needs to focus that all the staff members should use PPE kits while preparing food, should wear gloves and mask while doing other activities and all the things which are being used in the event need to be sanitized(Jaja, et. al. 2020). Along with this, the event organizers should make available the safety products such as masks, gloves, and proper sanitizing should be done on the participants when they enter the venue.

CONCLUSION

Sustainability is a major concern for businesses operating in diverse industries. The businesses operating in the event industry need to focus on their CSR activities which can help them in attaining sustainability and leading the company towards success. There are different sustainability issues that are being faced by event management companies. The event organizers need to focus on all these sustainability issues and in the present report, the major issues related to the sustainability of the event industry which is solid waste and health and safety are discussed in detail. It can be said that the businesses operating in the cited industry need to focus on recycling, reusing, and reducing which can help them in working effectively in a sustainable manner. Along with this the challenges resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic also need to be handled in an effective manner and for this, the organizers should follow all the safety measures. The report concludes that it is important for the event organizers to develop better strategies and work effectively in a sustainable manner.
