Discussion
The power imbalance proves to be one of the possible stressors that can be experienced by patient in healthcare settings (Wittenberg et al, 2021). Due to this patient often becomes stressed; in current case, healthcare specialist position of authority might lead to power imbalance and further contributing in Mr. Hui defensiveness. It is a kind of negative defense mechanism in which patient often deny and deflect complaint due to the fear of judgement. Mr Hui. felt defensive as there might be possibility that he has the fear of being judged, criticised and blame. There are certain factors which were ignored in the whole process such as cultural factors and emotional barriers. Mr. Hui s cultural background influenced his communication style and his preference for assertiveness and directness was recognised. From the literature it has been identified that sociocultural characteristics of patients impacts the communication procedure (Mata et al, 2021). Mr Hui. is stressed out due to consistent pressure on him, however, there might be possibility that he is experiencing fear of judgement that; healthcare professional might judge him for getting stressed out and not being able to tackle families responsibilities. In current context, healthcare professional lacked in developing an empathetic understanding which is an important factor for developing sense of belongingness in patient.
Mr. Hui s emotional stress is further creating shame related to his alcohol abuse and this is hindering communication procedure. In such situation, it is important to understand the emotional complexities of patient and accordingly an appropriate framework required to be adopted that led to enhance mutual understanding between service user and service provider These are the potential areas in which specific emphasis was needed as this can results in enhancing the whole communication procedure and further develops sense of belongingness in patients (Jankelová and Joniaková, 2021). For improving the communication process, healthcare specialist should use verbal and non-verbal cues for ensuring empathetic understanding. Furthermore, it is important to become culturally available so that differences can be identified and consequent support can be ensured to service user. By prioritising cultural and emotional needs of patient consequent support can be ensured and further effectual outcomes could be gain.
This helps in developing sense of belongingness in patient and further enhances whole communication process. The healthcare specialist should use ISBAR framework for assuring effectual communication procedure and this also helps in conveying necessary information. From the literature it has been identified that ISBAR model supports in organising crucial patient information when communication process is going on (Raeissi et al, 2024). This lead to enhance outcomes within communication procedure. This also helps in promoting communication among the clinicians and appropriate discussion regarding the patient situation can be undertaken and significant decision could be implemented.
It is important for healthcare professional to keep a non-judgemental attitude so that direct confrontations can be avoided and significant support to patient can be ensured. In this manner, effectual outcomes could be gained and consistent support to patient can be ensured. Thus, these are the major areas which are important to be focused out for enhancing communication procedure and further guides in adopting a holistic approach that emphasis on each of the developmental domain (Drossman et al, 2021). In this manner, effectual support can be ensured to patient and communication procedure can be enhanced to greater note. Healthcare provider should emphasis on this area so that significant outcomes could be gained and effectual support could be assured to service user (Drossman et al, 2021). In current case context, healthcare professional was lacking in certain context due to which patient got impacted in negative manner and he further had the fear of judgement. Therefore, it is essential to keep specific focus on varied area so that effective outcomes can be gained.
Good communication skills are essential in healthcare setting as it supports in gaining the trust of patients and further empower them so they can share their doubts (Shorey et al, 2020). Through this communication procedure, certain positive domains have been identified; healthcare specialist has used effective verbal and non-verbal response for communication and this developed a sense of belongingness in patient and further supported in undertaking communication in significant manner (Shorey et al, 2020). However, there are certain areas on-to which focus requires to be implied by service provider and this aligns with adopting a significant framework so that communication can be undertaken in effectual manner. In current case context, significant aspects have been witnessed that are upholding the notions of communication pattern (Drossman et al, 2021). Using a structured communication framework provides detailed guidance regarding the steps and activities which are needed to be performed. Hence, in this manner effective outcomes can be gained and significant support to patient could be assured. It is important to identify the needs and requirements of patients as it ultimately links with their satisfaction level and further enhances their health outcomes. Hence, there is no doubt in stating that communication skill proves to be essential in healthcare setting.
