Evaluation on Kolb's reflective learning model
Kolb`s learning reflective model also known as a “experiential learning” as it suggest that individual learn via experiences. The model was developed in 1984 by the David Kolb. The theory typically demonstrates by the four stage of learning cycle i.e. concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization as well as active experimentation. The first stage includes having the actual experience, second stage consist reflecting on the experience to get knowledge, third stage involves learning from the experience means generating new ideas, acquiring concepts as well as the fourth stage includes active experimentation, means learners applies the new gaining knowledge and ideas in the actual working. These four steps allow the individual to learn from experience in the effectives and proficient manner. The effective application of the model allows the learner to process the overall happenings during the experience.
The model has several strengths that makes it one of the impactful reflective model. One of the strength of Kolb`s model includes its simplicity. This makes the model easily to grasped as well as put into the practice (Davitadze et al, 2022). This simplicity makes it a useful model for the structured self-reflection. Another strength of the model includes flexibility and developing an ability of self-awareness. It is quite flexible as it can be use to many diverse scenarios. It four stages effectively helpful in create self-awareness while helpful in applying all areas of life.
However, each thing comes with some strength and weakness. One of the limitations of Kolb`s reflective learning model includes lack of inclusion of feedback from others due to its oversimplified nature. The model does not include or consider any kind of perspective and type of feedback (Ryder and Downs, 2022). This makes difficulty for the learner to develop and learn in the right and appropriate direction. In addition, other significant weakness includes lack of consideration on other methods of reflection during an action.
The model helps in reflect by using the four stages in a systematic manner, for instance at first stage learner experience learn something new thing, for instance a communication skill. Then, according to the reflective observation, the learner thinks about their experience such as use of verbal, non-verbal cues. In addition, at the abstract conceptualization, the learner actually starts to learn from the experience. For instance, they learn actually using verbal and non-verbal cues in the real- life scenarios. A last, at active experimentation, the learner actual use the experience learning, for instance use words with gesture, facial expression to furnish understanding to speaker. In this way, the model helps in reflect efficiently.
One of the suggestions for model in regards to enhancing its weakness is adding the stage for feedback. Inclusion of this stage within the reflective model aids in better identifies the strength and weakness of own that gain from the experience. It can enhance the learning by developing on the positive comments and utilizing the critical ones to inform changes for the future.
